My life with the Sony Clie TH55 (Part 3)

I am finally finishing the review of my Clie. When I last left off I was describing the Clie’s Scroll, Screen and Wi-fi capabilities. That is went I was slammed with work. Once again I am writing this on a Apple iBook G4, this to me is a great machine in its own right. Well here is the conclusion to the Clie Trilogy.
Battery Life: The battery life on the Clie is amazing. I can go for a good 5 days using the wi-fi with no recharge. When I say using the wi-fi I mean that I use it about 2-3 hours a day. Checking e-mail, using Veri Chat, Web browsing, updating my RSS feeds. It has become my primary device. I use it at work and at home to do any sort of web related stuff. If I don’t use the wi-fi it would probably go at least 15 days , if not longer. It also has a removable battery that I will exchange for a extended battery increasing the time between recharges.
Graffiti 2: The main text input is Graffiti 2. I had to get used to using Graffiti again from using the Treo 300’s integrated keyboard. At first I was a little pissed that I had to go back to Graffiti but know I have mastered it again and I am just as fast as I was on the keyboard. I also installed my faithful application TextPlus to help out with big words.
Camera: Yeah, it has a camera. It seems that all devices have to have cameras these days. Well, it is actually really nice to have. Allot of the photos on my moblog were taken with it.
Applications: The Sony Clie comes with its own version of the Palm organizer. It has some nice features; such as tab apps. I can go between application in the organizer just by selecting tabs on the left hand side of the screen. It is pretty nice but once again I went back to my palm standards (i.e. DateBook5, Memo Plus and Contacts plus). It still is a nice features and really was a good indicator on where Sony was going before they pulled the plug. It would have been really nice for them to keep on developing for the Clie.
Conclusion: Having gone from two devices (phone & pda) to one device (Treo 300) back to 2 devices. I can say that I don’t regret getting rid of my Treo for the Clie and Nokia. I am really enjoying the device. It has everything I need and then some. I think to myself how I could have survived without my pda. I use it for everything, Carolyn always laughs because I always have it near me. Highly recommended device. To bad just as Sony was getting it right they pulled out.

I love the 90′s

So once again I am addicted to the “I Love the _ _” on VH1. This time it is I love the 1990′s. All I can say is that I am starting to feel really old.

My life with the Sony Clie TH55 (Part 2)

The Sony Clie TH55 is an amazing piece of electronic gadgetry. It is light weight, sleek and fast. I have impressed with the device ever since I first opened the box. When you first take it out of its yellow foam safety sleeve, it has a very 2001: A Space Odyssey Monolith kind of look to it. It is shiny and black with relatively no surface marks (until you smudge it up with your finger prints.) The style is pure Sony. It is just beautiful. I feel great and natural when you hold it and gets lot of looks and questions when you use it. I am very happy with the over all form factor.
The Scroll: Sonys trade mark addition to the PDA world was the scroll wheel on the Clie. On my SJ33 and my Treo 300; the scroll was located on the left hand side, just where you thumb would rest. This was perfect; if you where right handed. When I purchased the TH5, the scroll wheel is located on the back towards the top, above the camera. This where your index figure rest if you hold it like it should be held. This has taken a little while to get used to. It feels kind of strange at first but once you get used to it, it makes logical sense and it feels great. This is also perfect if you are a left handed person. There are two buttons on either side of the scroll wheel that perform different functions depending what application you are currently in (i.e. NetFront web browser; shift web page left or right for a better view when you are in standard viewing mode). To the right of the scroll is a Back button; this also performs different functions depending on the application that you are in at the time (i.e. NetFront we browser; go back to previous page). I have fallen in love with the scroll wheel.
TH55

The Screen: I really do not want to say to much about the TH55 screen other than it is absolutely incredible. The resolution is just amazing (320X480). The Clie has always been know for its resolution. On the TH55 they use a virtual Graffiti area (much like the Palm Tungsten T3). The only thing is that does not allow you to do is rotate from portrait to landscape mode. I think there is a hack but I have not really looked yet.
Wi-Fi: The TH55 has integrated 802.11b wireless which is just amazing. This was a must for any PDA that I was going to purchase. Having gone from the Treo 300 with being able to do e-mail, web surfing and downloading RSS feeds anywhere, I needed some sort of wireless capability. This was a great choice. I have wi-fi at home and at work. I have a T-mobile wi-fi account which my work pay for. There are also lots of free wi-fi hotspots every where I have gone. It makes it bearable not to have the constant wireless. If I really need some information I can always browse with my phone. I have learned to deal after getting ride of the Treo 300.
I have to finish up some work.. I will continue later…

Play with an Apple iBook

I am doing some work today and realize that I need to check out my code on three diffrent browsers (Mozilla, IE and Safari). I had two of them but I was lacking the third. I am using a co-workers Apple iBook G4 and it rocks. I am really impressed with the feeling that I am getting using this computer. I keyboard is amazing and the feel is really great over all. I have been glued to this all day. I love the Unix console. It gave me the ability to connect (via ssh) to my main dev box and do all my work. The battery life is great; I have been using it for about 3 hours now and I still have about 1 hour left on the box. It is so tiny and light; It has so much packed into it. It has taken me a little while to get used to using the single button touch pad but it has been pretty easy. This is the first real opportunity that I have had to use an Apple for something pratical like work. I really think my next laptop with be an Apple. I really want a 15″ Powerbook. I have to finish what I am doing right now and then when I get home finish my review of the Sony Clie TH55.
