My name is Bill and I am a gadget addict. I am always swapping phones. Lately I have swapping (much to the dismay of my system administrator) between my trusty Palm Treo 600 and my BlackBerry 7100t. I am a T-Mobile user for better or worse. Each phone has its pros and cons. The Treo has many more applications, it has better signal strength and is pretty damn reliable. The BlackBerry is more simplistic, has Bluetooth (though very limited no DUN or syncing just headset and auto) and SureType (the funky BlackBerry keyboard solution) is great. Once you get used to it, it is truly amazing and fast. I connect with both phones to my companies exchange network. The Treo uses Good Technology and the BlackBerry uses the BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server). Both services have the pros and cons also. Good Technology is faster and offers convenient features such as mark for follow up and enterprise rule based delivery to other mail folders. BlackBerry has a better contact manager and more robust calendar management. Both phones are only GPRS. Well, the time has come and the next generation of phone is come. Advances in network is getting close to broadband speed, I am talking about EDGE.
I have this vision in my mind of what my ultimate setup would be. This setup is not just the phone, that is only one part of my master plan. The important features have to compliment my other devices. I always approach my devices as part of a larger system. I guess my needs dictate what I am looking for in a unified mobile traveling system. I travel for part of my job. My main computer is my 15″ Powerbook, this the best laptop I have used or owned. It has everything I need. It is truly an effective machine. I need a phone to compliment this while I still retain my mobile connectivity. I want the ability to stay connected mobile via my phone. I have been spoiled by have my contact, mail, task and calendar sync wirelessly but I would love for my PowerBook to have the ability to connect also when I need that extra computing power and there is no Wifi available for me to use. This brings the EDGE necessity. So currently there are one or two choices. I could good with the solution that everyone is going to scream that I should get which is the Palm Treo 650 GSM Unlocked (T-Mobile does not currently offer this phone so I would have to buy it on eBay) or I could wait and see what is coming. Nokia is currently getting ready to release a new line thus the reason for this. There are other lines that are also coming out but I want to highlight the new Nokia phones here. I will have to keep an eye out for all the phones that I are coming out from all vendors but it looks like I will have to wait until 1st quarter of 2006 or later. I also know is that eventually I will be happy.
